Black and White Rice

With my husband being a farmer and myself a gardener, I think about where my food comes from often.  But, maybe not as often as I should.

Today, while eating lunch I was reading the rice package looking for the cooking instructions and what I was drawn to was, land of origin Thailand.

And thoughts stirred up.  How did it get here?  On a ship?  In crates?  how to the ship?  a truck?  how to the truck?  manual labor or conveyor belt? how was it harvested? (Very labor intensive I know.)  I know there are you tube videos to answer all of this and maybe someday I'll look.  But, today it was enough to just think about it, pray for those who labor so I can eat,  and to pray for the hungry.

Jasmine rice is our favorite here, but I'm trying fried rice for the first time and I'm thinking that this may not have been the best choice as it is a sticky rice.  We'll see.

Camping in Black and White

It seems that a 'once a year camping trip' is all we can work out these past years.  Which is better than than the 'no camping trip years' that we had. :)

We camped close to the farm so my husband could still go "git er done" as it is harvest time.  As he went out early Saturday morning, he called us out to enjoy the morning and the mist.

Thank goodness he did.  It was beautiful.

Chilly fall camping is the best.

Early misty mornings while chilly fall camping is even better.

~have a great day~

"Hmmm...what should I do today?"

I saw this over here on a blog called Simple Joys and thought it was so cute.  In a moment of avoiding work, I cut my own.
I have to admit, mine looks a little more like she's doing deep knee bends instead of pondering the day, haha!

Frosty Dandelion: Black and White Wednesday

A few weeks ago after one of the first light frosts, I stopped and took pictures of the frosty dandelions by our lane.

I love dandelions that have gone to seed and covered in frost, they are even prettier.

As I was taking pictures, this guy crawled out.

I know so little of the small life that exists around us.

I guess he decided to show off.

I like the sun flare bokeh on this one.

Looks like the snow we will be looking at in the months ahead.

Happy Wednesday!

I'm linking up again this Wednesday with Adrienne.

Sunday in the Park

There has been lots of celebrating and just life stuff going on here...a baby shower, marching band competition, visiting, coffee drinking, birthday cake eating, bike riding, cheering...
everything but duck feeding.

We went to the park on Sunday to feed the ducks.  There were only 4 geese to be seen, no ducks, and the geese took off when we tried to approach them.  I've taken my kids to the park for years to feed the ducks and this is the first time we went home with our stale bread.

So we played a bit instead.

My husband and daughter share a birthday and we celebrated on Sunday.  My college son was home, but opted for a nap on the couch instead of duck feeding at the park.  What?!
I'd already had my nap. :)

My son in law was working on their house renovation. Or maybe he was napping too? Ha!
It could have been a Christmas card picture taking event. But, candid shots = less stress = more play.

I'm a day late, but that's not a surprise.  Linking with Adrienne here:

Black and White Wednesday

Remember this post from Black and White Wednesday?  Well, my son has had one film developed, but no prints made yet.  The light meter on the camera appears to be faulty and when he took it in to the camera shop he was told it couldn't be fixed or at least not for a reasonable fee.  He was advised to buy a light meter to use separately from the camera.  He's knee deep in college right now so all the picture taking is pretty much on the back burner.

I really liked this photo of him checking out his negatives.  Do you remember doing this?  Trying to figure out which one you wanted reprinted?!  I hope to some day do some type of art project with old negatives or slides, just not sure what yet.  I've seen lamp shades made from them that are kind of neat.  Maybe I need to get an x-ray light box to display some on!  There must be some available somewhere as all x rays are now digital. Hmmm....

Black & White Wednesday

My freshman daughter golfed in her first meet yesterday!  She let me come to watch a few holes and take some pictures.  She's just a beginner, and it will be fun to see her improve over time.  I'm still waiting to see myself improve....ha!!

Black & White Wednesday

This lovely still life was found in my daughter's new house when we stopped to see the progress they were making.

Hmmm...I just realized how neat these nails would look in one of my rusty old cans.  Not that I don't already have lots of old nails, but there could be room for more.

They've served their purpose well for many years.

I don't think my son in law would gaze upon these with the fondness that I do.  It took him hours to pull them all out!!

Black and White Wednesday

My son decided it would be fun to try and shoot some pictures with film.  *gasp* Do you remember the limitations?  the expense?  But, sometimes in limitations there is freedom.  I'm not sure where it is here yet...ha!...but it's forcing him to really think about exposure and composition.  So far there are no pictures developed.  He is shooting really old film which of course will be corrupted to some degree, but he thought it better than putting money into something that he may not stick with.  The first film was so old it was completely green and he wasn't charged for the developing.  He just bought some new film so hopefully he'll have some success. Or, he will find out that the camera is malfunctioning.  Time will tell.

This is my in-laws old 35 mm camera.  My first 35mm is broken and my second was either lost or stolen on our honeymoon.  That is what forced me to begin to shoot digitally.  Maybe not such a bad thing.  However, I have to say that touching and handling the film while showing him how to load it was a treat!!!  It brought back memories and good feelings.  It's been 10 years since I've shot film.  How about you?  How long?  Do you miss it at all?

Black and White Wednesday

Hello to you all!  I've missed posting here and thought I'd join in with Black and White Wednesday to let you know I'm still around. :)

If you follow along on instagram, you may know that my son has high aspirations of making a canoe out of a big tree trunk from our place.

The other day he whittled while watching the trunk burn out.  (He went to a soap carving club in college...ever hear of that?)

Not perfect, but for a short amount of time...he has a spear.  I want to whittle!

I need to find him a strap of leather from my sewing room to replace the string!

Playing with the hose and making rivers is always fun.

This daughter is often the instigator to get the younger ones building waterways, dams, and the like outside.

Shall we spear the fish or use the old bait and hook way??
They caught a few little fish...with a hook...

I hope your summer is off to a good start!
