Black and White Wednesday

My son decided it would be fun to try and shoot some pictures with film.  *gasp* Do you remember the limitations?  the expense?  But, sometimes in limitations there is freedom.  I'm not sure where it is here yet...ha!...but it's forcing him to really think about exposure and composition.  So far there are no pictures developed.  He is shooting really old film which of course will be corrupted to some degree, but he thought it better than putting money into something that he may not stick with.  The first film was so old it was completely green and he wasn't charged for the developing.  He just bought some new film so hopefully he'll have some success. Or, he will find out that the camera is malfunctioning.  Time will tell.

This is my in-laws old 35 mm camera.  My first 35mm is broken and my second was either lost or stolen on our honeymoon.  That is what forced me to begin to shoot digitally.  Maybe not such a bad thing.  However, I have to say that touching and handling the film while showing him how to load it was a treat!!!  It brought back memories and good feelings.  It's been 10 years since I've shot film.  How about you?  How long?  Do you miss it at all?

My Memory Art

  1. I have so many great memories captured on film. All of my daughter's growing up years. It has probably been more than 10 years for me. I got on the digital train fairly early on. I wouldn't go back, I love the creative control I have now.

  3. I remember those days well. My son is starting his college degree in photography and media art and at some point it will include film photography - I can't wait for his reaction. We are so spoiled with digital.

  4. I did enjoy film but thought I was at the mercy of those developing my film...now I get to "develop" my own pictures and shoot more if needed!

  5. I remember the smell of it. My Dad gave me all of his film cameras last summer. When I visit him in the fall he's going to show me my way around a hasselblad. A little daunting by myself - so I'll be glad for his tutelage.

  6. I do miss film! In fact I got my old 35mm out recently for some strange reason. (I spent a lot of money on that and those lens!!!!) Anyway....... I digress..... there was a roll of film in there with a few shots on it. I really need to take that in to be developed! I DO love digital tho!!!

  7. Love that 'Norbert Ruskamp' is engraved on the back of the camera. What's great about film is that there is no Instagram and no antique-y filters to make photos look false and contrived. Film is the real deal and the manipulation can't come until during and after developing. It takes skill to create an artful composition and catch subject matter 'just so'. Can't wait to see what comes from this!
